Overview
Multi-legged decomposers that break down dead plant material into soil nutrients. Occasionally enter homes in large numbers.
25-100mm, cylindrical, dark brown. 2 pairs of legs per body segment (unlike centipedes). Curls into spiral when threatened.
Prevention Strategies
- •Reduce moisture and mulch near foundation
- •Seal entry points to home
- •Move mulch away from building foundation
Control Methods
- •Remove mulch and debris from building foundation
- •Diatomaceous earth barrier at entry points
- •Generally leave alone - important decomposers
- •Seal foundation entry points for indoor invasions
Interesting Facts
- •Some species produce cyanide gas as defense - enough to kill small animals
- •Not insects - ancient lineage predating dinosaurs by 400 million years
- •Some species have up to 750 legs
- •Important ecosystem engineers - millipede feces are an important soil amendment
