low risk
insect
Overview
Common garden insect whose nymphs are visible as frothy white spittle masses on plants. Vector of Xylella fastidiosa bacteria in Europe.
Nymphs hidden inside white frothy mass (spittle) on plant stems. Adults 5-7mm, mottled brown, jump strongly.
Prevention Strategies
- •Remove and crush spittle masses when found
- •Maintain plant health through proper watering
Control Methods
- •Hose off with water (removes nymphs from plant)
- •Hand crush spittle masses
- •Insecticide rarely needed for direct damage
- •In Xylella risk areas: report and follow quarantine measures
Interesting Facts
- •The 'spittle' is actually not saliva - it is produced from surplus xylem sap secreted from anus
- •Vector of Xylella fastidiosa which is devastating olive trees in southern Italy (Puglia)
- •Both adults and nymphs are remarkably difficult to find despite being widespread
- •Name comes from the cuckoo-spit folk name - thought to be cuckoo saliva historically
